Preview — Pinocchio: Vampire Slayer (a comic I wrote)

As I mentioned Friday, I had the pleasure of bringing my own mini comic to Heroes Con a couple weeks ago, and it got a very nice response. The artist, Dusty Higgins, and I are still searching out a publisher for the book, which has the working title Pinocchio: Vampire Slayer.

More than anything, it’s a really fun little story, and a clever idea from Dusty’s brain. When finished, it’ll be black and white in digest size, about 115 pages.

And now, made public for the first time, here is the opening sequence to the comic:

In case you can’t read the text in that final page, he says: “I am Pinocchio. I kill monsters.” I had to bump the file-size down a little so it could fit, since it’s a two-page spread.

FYI, since I’ve been asked this a lot already, the book is based entirely on the original Pinocchio fairy tale. It is in no way, shape or form related to Disney’s animated film, aside from the few things Disney didn’t change from the fairy tale.

So, what do you think?

  1. Looks good, Van! Congrats!

Funny idea, I’m hoping for a training montage where Gepetto teaches Pinnochio how to be a killer.

Brilliant! The black and white is great.

  4. Is Pinocchio a fairy tale? I guess it’s a tale and it has a fairy in it. But I thought he was a fictitious character created by Carlo Collodi. “Pinocchio: Tale of a Puppet” by Carlo Collodi (1883). I mean, I know Pinocchio is in the public domain. But that doesn’t mean he’s just sprang from the mists of folklore. You should probably credit Carlo Collodi or put a character named “Carlo Lorenzini” (Collodi’s real name) in the story as a tribute.

This is a GREAT short, short story. Very well drawn. Well written. Funny. I don’t know how you can sustain this joke over 115 pages. But I’m willing to check it out once it’s here. Good luck.

Ah, your grandmother would be proud. She hated how Disney made gutsy stories into sickeningly sweet tales.

  6. Wow….so when I heard about this project I thought it was going to be funny. I like that the graphics really make it seem darker. I alos like that the dialogue and plot shows a commitment to the premise. It’s incredibly engaging, even for a vampire lover like me.

Will we learn how the world became like this?
    Pinnochio’s backstory?
    etc?

  7. Okay, that was a lot cooler than I was expecting. I love the look and feel, great art!
