  • It’s always nice to see comics creators (in this case illustrator James Lyle) sharing the joy of comics with kids. (Asheville Citizen-Times)
  • The awesomely unforgettable boulder scene from Indiana Jones was an homage to an Uncle Scrooge comic (CBR). Now that’s one heck of a vague reference that furthers my love of Raiders of the Lost Ark just a little more.
  • Film Fodder has a good piece on Marvel’s finances, breaking down how the company has done in the past couple years (quite well). A note of disclosure: I own a little Marvel stock.
  • Dan Slott is the latest guest on Marvel’s podcasts. The host refers to him as “Mr. She Hulk.”
  • Here is a write up of the Lit Graphic: The World of the Graphic Novel exhibit at the Norman Rockwell Museum.
  • The New York Times writes about how common it has become for dotcomics to be adapted into real books, citing Shooting War as the prime example.
  • Speaking of the Times, their mistaken assertion that Gail Simone is the first Wonder Woman writer in the character’s 66-year history is still making the rounds, now in a Reuters Q&A.
  • Weird story out of the St. Cloud Times. People have been posting swastikas around town, and someone responded by anonymously posting a cartoon criticizing the swastika-posters. The local authorities nabbed the cartoonist, but they still haven’t caught those who put up the swastikas in the first place.
  • Time Magazine has chosen its top 10 graphic novels of the year, and the list is up at if magazine. A few good choices, notably All Star Superman, Sentences: The Life of MF Grimm, and Exit Wounds. But League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Black Dossier? Marvel Zombies? These Time reviewers need to read more books.
  • The guy making costumes for the upcoming JLA movie just died, a sad bit of news amid the production (Variety).
  • Everyone in the western world has bemoaned the probable cutting of much of Alan Moore’s great Watchmen once it hits the silver screen. Kevin Church is likewise concerned about another upcoming property, the animated New Frontier. I’d add that it’s not like DC has a great track record with direct to DVD movies. Jeff Parker, on the other hand, is pumped that more New Frontier comics material is on the way.
  • Gail Simone says: “have you ever noted how many of the stories are about how icky icky girls ruin Spidey’s playtime? And how many of the females are clearly drag queens? Spidey’s gay, and MJ’s a beard.”
  • Dan Abnett on writing, sort of: “Allow me to, first, disambiguate some important stuff (‘disambiguate’ is a proper fifty buck writer’s word; see how I use it, devil-may-care, like I’ve got a bag of them? This is not the sign of a good writer. Also, see how I went and split the infinitive? And you’re taking advice from me?).”
  • Two terribly funny (in various ways) subway stories, courtesy of Peter David.
  • Ouch. From a recent posting by Heidi MacDonald at PW’s The Beat, she says it’s hard to find anything on Newsarama, owing to the “2001 era front page.”
